Yorba Linda, Orange County, CA
Known as the “Land of Gracious Living,” Yorba Linda retains its small-town ambiance and is recognized as one of the “100 Best Places to Live” in the United States. In 1834, when Bernardo Yorba owned the land, it was called ‘Rancho Canon de Santa Ana’ and was located north of the Santa Ana River. He built one of the largest adobe-style homes (said to have 50 rooms) and called it ‘San Antonio’. In 1907, a portion of the land was purchased by Jacob Stern, a pioneer from Fullerton who partnered to acquire Rancho Canon de Santa Ana land to develop a townsite. In 1908, the Janss Corporation in Los Angeles bought part of Stern’s property, naming it Yorba Linda (‘Linda’ meaning ‘beautiful’ in Spanish). Lemon and orange groves were planted, and in 1912, the Southern California Edison Company started to provide electricity.
The first church was built, and the Pacific Electric Railway opened. Former President Richard Nixon was born in 1913 in Yorba Linda, and it is here that the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum opened in 1990 on a 9-acre plot of land where he was born and buried. Yorba Linda Regional Park is a great outdoor space for the family and has a lake, playgrounds, and walking trails. Carbon Canyon Regional Park is known for its hiking trails and redwood trees. You can also take your road bike on the nearby Santa Ana River Trail; the 27-mile section from Yorba Linda to Huntington Beach is the longest uninterrupted section of this trail. For a more relaxing afternoon, stroll down Main Street, Yorba Linda’s original “downtown,” and check out Origami Handroll Bar or Versai Kitchen & Wine Bar for happy hour vegan and tapas-style food by the fireplace on the patio.
