The City of Orange, Orange County, California

Originally part of the Rancho Santiago of Santa Ana, the land now known as 'Orange' belonged to the Yorba and Peralta families. It was divided among multiple heirs, and eventually, two attorneys from Los Angeles bought thousands of acres. By 1870, one of the attorneys, Alfred Chapman, had subdivided part of the land and called the town Richland. But another town in California was already called Richland, so the new name Orange was chosen.

Local officials hoped to make the government seat for a future county by the same name. Grain and raisin grapes were the main crops, but the citrus industry boom began after a blight destroyed several vineyards (and railroads were built). The Southern California Fruit Exchange made up of local growers (packing houses), employed about a third of the labor force there in the 1920s.

About one square mile makes up Downtown Orange, constructed from about 1874 to 1940 with over 50 architectural styles, including Victorian, Craftsman, Mediterranean, and Spanish Colonial Revival. Known as "The Orange Circle," the Plaza Park is the center of a traffic circle, and in the middle of this quadrant is an illuminated fountain installed in 1937 to replace the original bronze fountain put there by a group of local women in the early 1900s with funds donated by local merchants. Now known as 'Old Towne Orange,' it is California's largest National Register District, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Antique shops and restaurants, farmers & artisans' markets, museums, and art galleries draw locals and visitors, including filmmakers looking for small-town, vintage locations with an "All-American" look. For example, Director Tom Hanks used many of the town's buildings for his early 1960s Pennsylvania set of the film 'That Thing You Do'; other movies filmed in Orange include Bridesmaids, Big Mama's House, Crimson Tide, and Cannonball Run.

The Orange International Street Fair is held the last weekend in August. It is a great family outing with delicious food and handmade arts and crafts. After a stroll through Old Towne, you can visit the 'Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University,' a collection focusing on the "California Scene" from the 1920s forward. Oil paintings, watercolors, and sketches of coastal scenes, ranches, and freeways depict everyday life in California. This collection also includes animation and movie art.
