Rancho Mission Viejo (“Old Mission Ranch”) consists of four master-planned communities, The City of Mission Viejo, the City of Rancho Santa Margarita, Las Flores, and Ladera Ranch. When the original landowner, John Forster, died in 1882, Irish immigrants Richard O'Neill Sr. and James Flood acquired the ranch. The families took equal ownership, part of which was acquired by the United States Marine Corps to expand Camp Pendleton. Marguerite, the widow of Richard O’Neill, established O’Neill Regional Park in 1950. This was the first of several parcels of land given to Orange County.
In 2000, ‘The Reserve at Mission Viejo’ was created with approximately 17,000 acres of preserved land for educational, ecological, and recreational use.
