Once known as 'Timber Canyon,' this rustic community is located in eastern Orange County in the Santa Ana Mountains. Named 'Silverado' after a short-lived mining boom in the late 1870s, this town today is unincorporated and sparsely populated with only a few stores and residential areas along Silverado Canyon Road, a winding road about 6 miles long that ends at a dirt trail leading to Santiago Peak, the highest point in Orange County (5,689 ft).
The Cleveland National Forest connects Silverado Canyon and Maple Springs, where off-road and hiking enthusiasts complete this approx. 10-mile climb, Passing Bedford Peak, then arriving at Bald Peak (the boundary between Orange and Riverside Counties), Silverado Motorway is the most strenuous part of the hike, an abandoned fire road with a 2000-foot vertical rise and stunning views of Mount Baldy and the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island, and Santiago Peak. For those who prefer lower elevations, many outdoor areas exist to explore. Road bicyclists and motorbikes roar and pedal on miles of rolling hills and challenging climbs.
Silverado Cafe is a local diner with a welcoming, mountain vibe offering breakfast and lunch and popular dishes such as breakfast eggs, sausage & bacon, biscuits and gravy, burritos, burgers, and sandwiches. Bikers and locals also flock to nearby Cook's Corner for live music, food, and drinks. Besides July 4th festivities, Silverado's 'Christmas in the Canyon' is a wonderful family event held in downtown Silverado Canyon the second week of December with a parade, photos with Santa, and hayrides.
