Santa Ana is Spanish for ‘Saint Anne.’ Originally called Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, it was renamed Santa Ana when William H. Spurgeon purchased 70 acres of the land in 1869. The population of Latinos residents increased from 40,000 to 90,000, and any efforts to gentrify Downtown Santa Ana were put aside as businesses focused on creating a Mexican cultural and working-class commercial zone. This sustained the Downtown area, which is today a thriving and diverse business district.

Santa Ana Artists Village was created around Cal State Fullerton's Grand Central Art Center to attract artists and young professionals to the area. In 2007, the Yost Theater, (a historic landmark which began in 1913 as the “Auditorium Theater” housing vaudeville, silent films, and talkies) opened as a concert and live performance venue.
