Santa Ana is Spanish for ‘Saint Anne.’ Originally called Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, it was renamed Santa Ana when William H. Spurgeon purchased 70 acres of the land in 1869. Incorporated as a city in 1886, it serves as the county seat and is the second most populated city in Orange County (after Anaheim). Also known as “Downtown Orange County”, Santa Ana was a central part of the growth and prosperity of Orange County, especially during World War 2 when an Army Air Base and training center brought servicemen and their families to settle in Southern California.
By the 1970s, economic inequality and perceptions between Latino and White residents had driven home values down while surrounding cities like Laguna Beach and Newport Beach increased in value. The population of Latinos residents increased from 40,000 to 90,000, and any efforts to gentrify Downtown Santa Ana were put aside as businesses focused on creating a Mexican cultural and working-class commercial zone. This sustained the Downtown area, which is today a thriving and diverse business district.
Arts and Culture
Santa Ana Artists Village was created around Cal State Fullerton's Grand Central Art Center to attract artists and young professionals to the area. In 2007, the Yost Theater, (a historic landmark which began in 1913 as the “Auditorium Theater” housing vaudeville, silent films, and talkies) opened as a concert and live performance venue. Many buildings in Santa Ana are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Spurgeon Building, Santa Ana’s first skyscraper with its iconic clock tower.
The Bowers Museum has art exhibits and artifacts that explore human cultures all over the world.
