Corona Del Mar is Spanish for ‘Crown of the Sea.’ Originally a part of Spanish grants in 1875, the land was purchased by James Irvine for $150,000. It was known as Irvine Ranch and inherited by Irvine’s son. By 1904, the parcel of land that would become Corona Del Mar was sold to George E. Hart, who envisioned beach communities along the coast that would attract tourists and residents. He took out a newspaper ad listing lots in Corona Del Mar starting at $100 with beach lots that sold for up to $750. Sales were slow, however, due to accessibility to the land and the lack of water service. In 1910, the first houses were built, one called ‘The Happy House’ at 2920 Ocean Blvd, which stood for almost 110 years before being demolished in 2017 and replaced with a house that is now priced at $30 million.

Corona Del Mar was annexed by Newport Beach in 1924, and in 1926, the Coast Highway was constructed, which started in Seal Beach and ended in Laguna Beach. It was only after World War II that the remaining land in Corona Del Mar was purchased by returning veterans and those brought to Southern California by the war. Today, locals and visitors enjoy this gorgeous hamlet with its stunning cliffside views and Corona Del Mar Beach (Big Corona), an excellent family beach spot with volleyball courts and fire pits. The Corona Del Mar Tidepools, or ‘Little Corona,’ is perfect for snorkeling and enjoying the sea urchins and other small fish you will see in the crystal-clear water. The Goldenrod Footbridge (built in 1928) is a great way to spend the afternoon, and a staircase built into the bluff will take you to Pirates Cove, where you can explore the caves (once featured on Gilligan’s Island). After sunset, visit Five Crowns, a landmark restaurant famous for its prime rib and wine list.
