The City of Capistrano Beach, Orange County, CA
Capistrano Beach, affectionately known as ‘Capo Beach,’ is a coastal community located in the city of Dana Point. It is north of San Clemente and south of Doheny Beach. It is called ‘Capistrano’ because of its proximity to San Juan Capistrano. In 1887, a rail line was built from Los Angeles to San Diego, and the train depot at Capistrano was called ‘San Juan by the Sea.’ It was renamed ‘Serra’ (after the school district) in 1910. There was talk of a promenade and waterfront resort with advertisements that announced the “Birth of a City.” The first homes were built on the bluff in 1925, and soon after, the Capistrano Beach Club, which offered free memberships to those who bought a lot of land. Businesses followed as Dana Point was developed, and even an airport was discussed. For years, though, storms caused severe erosion to the coastline, and the pier at Capo Beach was demolished.
By the late 1960s, the Capistrano Beach Club was dismantled, its gorgeous Spanish roof tiles taking so long to remove that proposed plans for a hotel and convention center (in 1969) never materialized. Today, there is a parking lot where the Beach Club once stood, and Capo Beach is a quiet, relatively unknown town where locals and visitors enjoy its low-key, relaxing atmosphere. Some of the many activities in Capo Beach are surfing, volleyball, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. Sunsets Bar and Grill and Olamendis Mexican restaurant are quick strolls from the sand, or you can pack an evening supper to enjoy by the firepit.
