The City of Trabuco Canyon, Orange County, California
Trabuco Canyon (Trabuco, Spanish for “Blunderbus” a type of shotgun) is a small unincorporated community just north of Rancho Santa Margarita.
There are very few major businesses in Trabuco Canyon for entertainment (and work), and most residents travel to the surrounding cities of Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest, or Foothill Ranch.
Trabuco Canyon is one of the most scenic and beautiful areas in South Orange County, ideal for remote camping and hiking. Local road and mountain bicycling enthusiasts ride through the canyon and never tire of the hills and other technical climbs and views. Favorite Mountain Bike rides are Santiago Peak and Holy Jim Trail, which are most popular in the cooler months.
Cook's Corner is a well-known biker bar and restaurant which was originally a 1920s cabin. The original owner’s son, E.J. Cook, opened a roadside hamburger joint in 1931. When Prohibition ended in 1933, alcohol was added to the menu, and in 1946 an old mess hall at the Santa Ana Army Air Base was purchased and converted into a tavern.
In the 1970s, the movie “Easy Rider” made motorcycles more popular than ever, and “Cooks” was surrounded by motorcycles and local motorcycle gangs on their way through the canyon. When the owners of a motorcycle parts shop bought the Cooks in 1975, they enforced a rule that no motorcycle club was ever allowed to fly their club’s colors during their stay.
Today the peace prevails, and Cooks Corner remains a favorite for motorcyclists, locals, and tourists. It is also the site of several fundraisers, including a “blessing of the bikes” courtesy of nearby St. Michael’s Abbey. There is also the Cooks Corner 9-11 Remembrance Ride, which Long Beach Firefighter Gary Biggerstaff started in 2003 when he and four others decided to ride their motorcycles from Cook’s Corner to Biggerstaff’s Belmont Shore home. Within a day, the ride grew to 55 people, and over the years, thousands more have participated.
