The City of Seal Beach, Orange County, CA

Seal Beach is located south of Long Beach and north of Huntington Beach. Today, it is a charming coastal haven, but during the 1920s Prohibition, it was a decadent border town with an amusement park, gambling halls, and speakeasies frequented by rumrunners and Hollywood royalty alike. In the 1800s, "Anaheim Landing" was a merchant port for farmers and businesses to transport wine, crops, and building materials. The introduction of the railroad in 1875 brought an end to the merchant business since it was easier to transport products by rail.

Los Angeles Get Away

By this time, “Bay City” was also a popular seaside destination for many who were escaping the summer heat of Los Angeles. Bay City was renamed Seal Beach and incorporated in 1915. Likened to Coney Island in New York, it was dubbed “The Coney Island of the Pacific,” offering cheap tent lodging and a bathing pavilion with 1,000 dressing rooms opened to the beach that rented for 25 cents each. The Joy Zone amusement park was built in 1916 with a large wooden roller coaster from the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. The ‘Jewel City Cafe’ had dinner and dancing, including a jazz orchestra that played well into the night. The dance pavilion and gaming establishments (including ships parked nearby) attracted thousands of visitors weekly.

Seal Beach and Hollywood

In 1923, Hollywood producers selected Seal Beach to film the ‘parting of the Red Sea’ scene of Cecil B. DeMille’s biblical epic (and silent version of ‘The Ten Commandments’). Visitors and locals enjoy the beach and small-town atmosphere, shopping Downtown and watching surfers from the Pier. One of the best restaurants in Seal Beach is Spaghettini Grill and Jazz Club, serving Northern Italian dishes and entertainment. The Crab Pot (in nearby Long Beach) offers a casual dining environment with an amazing variety of seafood like King Crab and steamed clams served in giant buckets. Ialc Restaurant & Bar (The Backyard) is also excellent, with a super healthy menu that includes all-natural, organic ingredients.
