The City of Brea

Brea (Spanish for “Tar” and named after the Tar Pits) was founded in the early 1900s when California became the leading oil-producing state in the United States.  It is located 33 miles south of Los Angeles and is close to La Habra, Fullerton, Placencia, and Yorba Linda. 

Brea's Transformation: From Oil Fields to Urban Development

In 1894, Abel Stearns sold 1,200 acres to the Union Oil Company of California, which established the Brea-Olinda Oil Field a few years later. The economy grew rapidly around the oil industry, and the towns of Olinda (and nearby Randolph) became incorporated as ‘Brea’ in 1917. By the late 1920s, oil production waned, and prices plummeted with growing competition from the booming automotive industry. Manufacturing and Agriculture continued to prosper, even after citrus groves were replaced by housing after World War II.  

A Cultural Hub with Thriving Arts and Entertainment Scene

Today, Brea is a major retail center. It is also known as “the city of art” with an extensive arts program, including the ‘Arts in Public Places’ sculpture collection. The Grove Shopping Center in Downtown Brea is an outdoor marketplace with premier stores, dining, and entertainment. The Brea Museum & Heritage Center will appeal to history buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the many parks including Carbon Canyon Park and City Hall Park. Year-round festivals and events include the City of Brea’s Wellness Festival and Brea Jazz Festival. The Brea Improv (comedy club) is a great place to catch a show after dinner at the Old Brea Chophouse or TAPS Fish House & Brewery with its award-winning menu of delicious seafood, steaks, and chops.
