Incorporated in 1926, Placentia (derived from a Latin word meaning “pleasant place to live”) is located in Northern Orange County, about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles, close to Yorba Linda and Fullerton. It is a quiet area with very little industry, also called a commuter or “bedroom” community. Placentia was originally part of a land grant in 1837 from the governor of Mexico to Juan Ontiveros (along with Anaheim, Brea, and Fullerton). In 1910, the Santa Fe Railroad built a station. This and the climate made Placentia an ideal location to grow citrus fruit, walnuts, and avocados. A major center during the citrus industry boom, the population grew to 25,0000 by the 1970’s and is still growing.  

It has been called an “All American City” with many acres of outdoor space. Tri-City Park spans 40 acres and has many outdoor activities, such as bicycling and walking. It’s a great place for birdwatching enthusiasts and fishing for catfish and bass in the lakes. The ‘Concerts in the Park’ summer series begins at 6:30 pm each Thursday evening. The George Key Ranch is a must-visit historic site with a house, park, and museum on over 2 acres, surrounded by over 400 Valencia orange trees.  Highly recommended restaurants to try in Placentia are El Farolito, family-owned since the 1970s, which is highly rated for excellent food and service at affordable prices and Craftsman Wood Fired Pizza on Yorba Linda Blvd with a delicious menu including vegan and gluten-free options. For seafood, try Fresh Off The Boat Fish Grill for battered and grilled fish tacos, pork carnitas, and filet-mignon kabobs (to name a few).
