Buena Park: A Historical Overview

The Founding of Buena Park

Buena Park, once known as “Plaza Buena” or “Good Park,” is located about 12 miles from downtown Santa Ana. It was founded in 1887 by James Whitaker, who purchased land from Abel Stearns.

The First Industry in Orange County

In 1889, Buena Park became the site of Orange County’s first industry when the Pacific Creamery Company established a factory producing canned condensed milk called Lily Cream.

The Rise and Fall of the Nabisco Cookie Factory

In 1965, the Nabisco Cookie factory was built, producing items like Honey Maid Graham and Ritz crackers. The factory, with its red “Nabisco” sign visible from the I-5 freeway, was demolished in 2006.

Knott’s Berry Farm: From Roadside Stand to Amusement Park

The Beginnings of Knott's Berry Farm

Knott’s Berry Farm, now owned by Six Flags, began as a roadside stand in the 1920s where Walter and Cordelia Knott sold berries and pies. Cordelia’s famous chicken dinners and Boysenberry Pie became popular during the Great Depression.

Expansion into a Theme Park

By the 1940s, Knott’s Berry Farm evolved into a full amusement park, featuring a 12-foot volcano, a gold mine, and a ghost town. It now attracts up to 4 million visitors annually with over 40 rides.

One of the key attractions was Knott’s Independence Hall, a replica of the original in Philadelphia. It features exhibits like the Liberty Bell and presidential artifacts.

Buena Park Today

Today, Buena Park is a thriving residential community with a population of about 84,000. It is home to a variety of attractions, including Knott’s Berry Farm, Los Coyotes Country Club, and Ralph B. Clark Regional Park.

Other Notable Attractions in Buena Park

Los Coyotes Country Club offers a 27-hole championship golf course and is a prominent landmark in Buena Park.

Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, located at the foot of West Coyote Hills, features nature trails, a fishing pond, and a museum showcasing ice age fossils and geology exhibits.
