The City of Rancho Santa Margarita, Orange County, California
Rancho Santa Margarita is a master-planned community and one of the youngest communities in Orange County, California. Most of the neighborhoods are maintained by homeowners associations, and Entry Systems regularly works with homeowners to match garage door color and style requirements.
Native Americans once lived in the area we call the city of Rancho Santa Margarita today. In 1769, Spanish explorer Captain Gaspar de Portola camped with his expedition on the eastern side of Trabuco Creek, three miles from Trabuco Oaks. After Spanish dominance and the foundation of the Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, this area of Orange County was part of Mexico. The Mexican governors specified a specific rancho as Rancho Santa Margarita. The Rancho property owners, the O'Neill family, founded the Mission Viejo company in 1963 and created plans to develop housing on the site. The first tract of houses was what is now Coto de Caza. Still, in the 1980s, more homes were constructed, and opportunities for housing expanded. Residents voted on incorporation in 1999, and on January 1, 2000, the City of Rancho Santa Margarita became the 33rd city in Orange County, California.
