The City of Lake Forest

The history buffs at Entry Systems know Lake Forest was once known as “El Toro” but fun facts: this area was once a stagecoach stop between San Diego and Los Angeles in the 1800s. After World War II it was the location of a Marine Base!

Lake Forest has two man-made lakes from which the city gets its name. The “forest” for which the city is also named comes from the Eucalyptus plantation which grew in the early 1900s when a ‘rumor’ that the United States was experiencing a hardwood famine started a planting craze. The Eucalyptus rush ended in 1913 when Eucalyptus wood was deemed virtually useless for lumber, but some of these gorgeous and fragrant trees can be seen in Serrano Creek Community Park, one of 30 public parks in Lake Forest including the Whiting Ranch Regional Wilderness Park.

There are dozens of places to hike and bike, or if you prefer boating and swimming, you can plan an afternoon by the lake with the family. Heritage Hill Historical Park offers free outdoor summer concerts, community playhouse productions, and tours of the restored historic buildings.
