The History of the Garage Door: From Old Barn Doors to Wi-Fi Garage Door Openers

Historic Garage Door

Where Did the Garage Come From?

What is the history of the garage and the overhead garage door? If you’re like most people, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about your garage door, let alone its history. That is, unless something goes wrong and you need to have it serviced. The garage has become a common part of the daily routine for most homeowners that it’s hard to imagine life without it. However, garages didn’t exist just a little over a century ago.

Few innovations in modern history have revolutionized the world like the automobile has. In the early 1900’s, cars replaced old-fashioned horse and carriages and became the most popular means of transportation in the U.S. As cars became more available and affordable for the common citizen, new industries and innovations grew — one being the advent of the modern garage space.

Car Storage

In the very early days of the automobile, garages as we know them today did not exist.  Suddenly people had to find a practical solution to protect their new expensive vehicles from the elements. For early car owners, a common practice was to store their car in the barn where they had kept the horses that pulled their old carriages. In more urban areas where people didn’t have a barn to store their car, large public garages began to spring up. People paid for a parking space in a covered lot, similar to a modern-day parking garage but with a single-covered level.

Inventions for a New Industry

Automobile ownership continued to expand and owners sought a new solution to store their vehicle closer to home. Some of the first personal garages were little more than crudely fashioned shelters. Most used carriage house style doors that would swing outward. These tended to wear out quickly and required frequent replacement. In 1921, C.G. Johnson invented the first garage door to open overhead. Five years later, he invented the first electric garage door opener! Ever since then, most garage doors have followed some variation of this same design. In the 1940’s following World War II, an economic boom meant an enormous increase in automobiles. This lead to an explosion in the growth of the garage door industry. Today our industry has created even more efficient and technologically advanced designs in both garage doors and garage door openers.

Garage Door Materials

For many decades, wood was the most common choice for garage door construction. However in the 1980’s most companies began to move away from this practice. The first generation of galvanized steel doors were introduced and soon revolutionized the industry. Steel doors had already existed for several years, but there were some major drawbacks to earliest models. This included issues with structural integrity, rust and oil canning. However these new generation of galvanized steel raised-panel doors would address the problems of previous designs. Eventually steel doors would become the most popular material for new garage doors. These durable, lightweight steel doors provided a beautiful, low-maintenance option. Many of these doors surpassed earlier designs in both looks and functionality, and to this day insulated steel doors are still the most popular choice for most homeowners.

The functionality and design of garage doors and openers has come a long way since the humble beginnings of converted barns with carriage house style doors that had to be opened by hand. As technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, the garage door industry has followed suit. Manufacturers constantly look for ways to provide safer, more efficient options for homeowners. There are now more options than ever for someone who is looking to boost their home’s curb appeal by installing a new garage door. Garage door openers now come with built in Wi-Fi, allowing homeowners to receive security notifications on their smartphone and control their garage doors from anywhere in the world.

If you are in the market for a new garage door, please feel free to contact us at Entry Systems to schedule an estimate with a technician who can help you choose the best option for your garage.

Nest Smart Thermostat: A Great (& Now Affordable) Holiday Gift

 Source: Nest.com

If you’re looking to purchase a gift this holiday season for a loved one or friend who’s excited by the latest and greatest in smart home technology, you don’t need to look much further than Nest’s smart thermostat.  This thermostat retails at $250. However, currently you can receive up to $125 in rebates in addition to using the beloved Bed Bath & Beyond 20% off coupon (saving you $50 up front). Costing only $75 and offering up to $60 annually in energy bill credits, the Nest Thermostat makes an exceptional (and now affordable) holiday gift that keeps on giving.

Many homeowners may be familiar with LiftMaster, one of the leading manufacturers of garage door products in the United States. The Nest Thermostat is one of a few, smart home products (including the popular Nest Cam) that now integrates with LiftMaster’s MyQ app.  My coworkers at Entry Systems have raved about the MyQ app, which is compatible with all LiftMaster garage door motors. Instead of needing a separate remote only used for your garage door, this MyQ technology connects to a free smartphone app allowing you to open or close your door from anywhere, even if you are miles away. When my brother offered me bicycles in his garage that needed to be removed for the garage sale the next day, I stopped by at his home while he was out to dinner and texted him that I was there. He then used his MyQ app to open the garage door for me! It is also good for those who are forgetful, like me, who always wonder- “Did I leave my garage door open?” This truly is a great tool for peace of mind!

LiftMaster’s MyQ technology has advanced one step further by allowing for integration with the innovative Nest Thermostat. Using the smartphone app, you can easily look at your 10 day history use and control your home’s temperature from anywhere.  The Nest Thermostat is a big step in changing how we look at our energy use. It learns what temperatures you like so it can keep you comfortable and help you save energy. It allows you to build a personalized temperature schedule as its smart technology learns what you like. It automatically saves energy when you leave home so you don’t waste money and energy heating or cooling your home when you are away. Southern California Edison will pay you to use less energy when everyone else is using more– making it a perfect, affordable holiday gift that will not only make the recipient’s life easier, but also save them money.

How to Program Your Car to a Liftmaster Garage Door Operator

Entry Systems Tech Talks: Programming Your Car to a Liftmaster Operator

In the second video of our new Tech Talks series, Jonathan, our Manager of Garage Door Operations, explains how to program your car to a Liftmaster operator using your car’s existing garage door opener buttons.

It is important for you to have easy access to your home. One great way to make your life that much more convenient is to program your car directly to your garage door operator! This will allow you another means of access into your garage and allow you to give your current garage door remote to another family member or keep it in a second car. Why not connect the technology you already have in place and make your life a little easier?

If you’ve never programmed your car’s garage door buttons, now is the time. It can be a little confusing the first time, but this video from an Entry Systems professional will allow you to DIY (do it yourself) in just a minute or two.

Here’s an overview:

Many cars these days have HomeLink buttons installed which allow you to easily program your car to open and close your garage door using a Liftmaster operator.

A car’s HomeLink usually has a small symbol of a house and three buttons, and it is most commonly placed on the roof right above the windshield on either driver’s side or in the middle.

It should look something like this:

Make sure you also have a currently programmed garage door remote so you can transfer it over to your car’s HomeLink buttons.

Now follow these simple steps:

1- Decide which car button you want to program. Press that button & make sure the light flashes slow. If the light is solid or flashes fast, hold it down until it starts flashing slow (it could take up to 30 seconds to reset).

2- Take the handheld garage door remote that is already programmed. Hold down that remote’s button at the same time as you hold down your car button until the car button’s light starts flashing fast.

(With some newer cars this is all you have to do! Press your car’s button, and if the garage door opens you are done! If the door doesn’t open, however, continue to the next step.)

3- Find the “learn button” on your garage door operator (that’s the button on the machine which pulls your door open). Push that button down quickly (just once!).

4- Now go back to your car and hold down the button you chose to program. The lights on your motor should blink once.

5- Press your car’s programmed button & your garage door should now open. You’re all done!

In the first video of our brand new Tech Talks series, Jonathan, our Manager of Garage Door Operations, explains how to program Liftmaster’s 877MAX Keyless Keypad to one or more garage doors or automated gates.

We know security and convenience are essential for you and your family. A garage door keypad is a common device which allows you the peace of mind of a security system without the hassle of having to carry a key or remote around with you. It can be confusing how to operate this device or make it work with you garage door. That’s why we made this videoWhether you are programming your garage door keypad for the first time or you simply feel like changing the code, this step-by-step guide from an Entry Systems professional makes it a quick and easy task.

Here’s an overview:

The Liftmaster 877MAX keypad can program multiple garage doors and automated gates. It works with any color “learn button” on your garage door operator (that’s the button on the machine which pulls your door open).

Programming your 877MAX keypad is easy.

1- Open the keypad and hold the star (*) and pound (#) buttons down until the lights on the keypad start to flash. The keypad will stop flashing and be lit up.

2- Enter the four digit code of your choice on the keypad.

3- Press the “learn button” on your garage door operator & the light next to the button will come on.

4- Hit the “Enter” button on your keypad. You will press it a certain number of times depending on the color of your “learn button.”

For a yellow “learn button”: 1 time

For a purple “learn button”: 2 times

For an orange or red “learn button”: 3 times

For a green “learn button”: 4 times

5- Press the number zero on your keypad, and it will lock in your code.

6- You can test your system by inputting your four digit code and pressing enter. Your system should now run!

It’s really that easy. We’d love to hear any questions you might have, video ideas you’d love to see, or any other general feedback. Make sure to subscribe to our channel and keep up with the content we produce!

Spring Cleaning Starts in the Garage

Spring is just around the corner!  This is my favorite time of year.  I enjoy getting out in the yard, planting vegetable seeds, and enjoying all the new flowers and blooms.  Many of us have been pent up all winter and are ready to clean and organize.  Your garage is a good place to start!

Here in Southern California we don’t have weather that would cause build up on the exterior of the garage door but it is not a bad idea to begin your garage cleaning with wiping down the outside of your garage door.  You can use a simple household cleaner, our technicians recommend Simple Green, to spray and wipe down the door.

Once the door is clean it is time to move inside the garage.  A good thing to do occasionally is to lubricate the hinges, springs, and bearings with a silicone based lubricant as recommended by the manufacturer.

Once your garage door is running smoothly again, the next step is to start organizing all the Christmas decorations, sports equipment, and camping gear that has somehow piled up along the walls and in the rafters.  Pull everything out and organize it by category.  While you have all the boxes out of the garage it would be a good idea to sweep out the corners and get rid of any cobwebs.  If you need to build shelving, now would be a good time to do that.  There are plenty of storage accessories available for purchase as well.  Have you thought about hanging the bikes?  Or how about hanging your gardening tools and cleaning supplies?  .

The garage is such a large part of our house and can be a very functional place as long as we keep it organized.

Are you Prepared for a Power Outage? – LiftMaster Battery Backup

This weekend my fiance and I went to visit my parents who live in San Diego.  We arrived Friday evening.  Traffic had been pretty heavy so we were looking forward to relaxing and watching some TV with my mom.  As we were watching we had an unexpected power outage.  My dad works in the evening and was on his way home from work.  Our first thought, after we accessed some candles for light, was wondering how he was going to get in the garage without any power.  Thankfully we had an Entry Systems employee with us and he knew exactly what to do!  He disengaged the motor and lifted the door manually.  The first thing he said was, “Don’t you wish you had a battery backup for your motor?”

Unfortunately my parent’s house was not equipped with a battery backup to use in a time like this.  We saw this weekend how unexpectedly things can change and helpful it would have been to have that battery backup.  Make sure you are prepared for the next power outage by adding a LiftMaster battery backup to your garage door opener!

With a battery back-up on your operator you won't end up stuck in the next power outage.

With a battery back-up on your operator you won’t end up stuck in the next power outage.

The LiftMaster 8550 and 8500 both have battery back up capabilities. For more information about garage door openers, click here.

Entry Systems to the Rescue

Entry Systems to the Rescue

When you have an Entry Systems technician show up at your house you might receive more than you are expecting.  Our technicians are very well trained in everything having to do with garage doors.  They are good guys who genuinely want to help our customers.  Sometimes the opportunity to help with something other than the garage door presents itself.  This story is an example of that.

Not long ago we received a call from a customer requesting service for their garage door.  We added her to the schedule and when the time came, we sent our technician out to see what was going on with her garage and how he could help.  As he was doing the adjustments, the customer’s husband came out to the garage to check on how things were proceeding.  While he was talking with our technician, he became faint and passed out on the garage floor.  His wife became hysterical and our technician immediately began to assess the situation and decide what he could do to help.  Not every one knows this, but this particular technician is a certified paramedic and worked as a reserve fire fighter before coming to work for Entry Systems.  He sat the man up in a chair and had the man’s wife call 9-1-1.  When the paramedics arrived they were impressed with our technician’s knowledge and how he handled the situation.  He never did tell them he is a certified paramedic.

At Entry Systems we take pride in our work.  We have highly trained technicians who love working with our customers.  You never know what kind of bonus you may receive when you have Entry Systems come to service your garage door or automated gate.
