How do you know when it’s time to replace your garage door opener?

After being in business for over forty years, we’ve seen all sorts of garage door opener issues here at Entry Systems. Some of the problems our customers call us for are unique, but there are certain problems that happen frequently. Every week someone calls us to say “I think my garage door opener is dead, what should I do?” So how do you know when it’s time to either repair or replace your garage door opener?

Check out these simple guidelines to help make the decision easier if you are on the fence about whether you should try to repair or replace your garage door opener.

  • One of the first things our technicians look at when inspecting a malfunctioning garage door opener is the manufacture date. Most garage door openers have a tag near the programming button on the opener that will tell you how old it is. If your opener is over ten years old and is having a problem, you should consider replacing it.  Parts for an opener over 10 years old can be challenging if not impossible sometimes to find.
  • If your garage door opens randomly on its own, you should probably think about installing a new opener. This usually is a sign that the logic board inside of the motor is failing. While most logic boards can be replaced, there is no guarantee about how long a new board would last. Since there is no way to guarantee how long it will last, installing a new opener is often the best choice.
  • If your remotes, keypad or programmable visor in your car stop working, it might be a problem with the receiver.
  • If it seems like there is suddenly no power to your garage door opener, you may want to consider replacing it. However, you’ll want to test the electrical socket to discover the nature of the problem.  Try plugging in a different electronic device into the socket. If the device you plug into the socket works normally but your opener still doesn’t work, it’s time to replace it.
  • If your opener is so old that it does not include photo eye sensors, you should consider replacing it. These sensors are designed to prevent your door from closing on anyone or anything that is in the way.  The Federal Consumer Products Safety Act, passed in 1993, requires all garage door openers to have safety sensors. Any garage without these sensors is technically not up to code, and would greatly increase the risk of injury. You’be better off with the peace of mind that having a safe, modern garage door opener will surely give you.
  • If you hear a grinding sound coming from your opener,  you should consider replace it. Usually this is an indication that the gear inside the motor has become stripped.

Hopefully, these guidelines will give you an idea of whether you should repair or replace your current garage door opener. If you’re still unsure which decision makes the most sense for you, give us a call at 949-495-0835 or fill out our online service request form. With over 40 years of experience serving Orange County CA, you can count on our garage door specialists for professional maintenance and repair service for your garage door opener!

The History of the Garage Door: From Old Barn Doors to Wi-Fi Garage Door Openers

Historic Garage Door

Where Did the Garage Come From?

What is the history of the garage and the overhead garage door? If you’re like most people, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about your garage door, let alone its history. That is, unless something goes wrong and you need to have it serviced. The garage has become a common part of the daily routine for most homeowners that it’s hard to imagine life without it. However, garages didn’t exist just a little over a century ago.

Few innovations in modern history have revolutionized the world like the automobile has. In the early 1900’s, cars replaced old-fashioned horse and carriages and became the most popular means of transportation in the U.S. As cars became more available and affordable for the common citizen, new industries and innovations grew — one being the advent of the modern garage space.

Car Storage

In the very early days of the automobile, garages as we know them today did not exist.  Suddenly people had to find a practical solution to protect their new expensive vehicles from the elements. For early car owners, a common practice was to store their car in the barn where they had kept the horses that pulled their old carriages. In more urban areas where people didn’t have a barn to store their car, large public garages began to spring up. People paid for a parking space in a covered lot, similar to a modern-day parking garage but with a single-covered level.

Inventions for a New Industry

Automobile ownership continued to expand and owners sought a new solution to store their vehicle closer to home. Some of the first personal garages were little more than crudely fashioned shelters. Most used carriage house style doors that would swing outward. These tended to wear out quickly and required frequent replacement. In 1921, C.G. Johnson invented the first garage door to open overhead. Five years later, he invented the first electric garage door opener! Ever since then, most garage doors have followed some variation of this same design. In the 1940’s following World War II, an economic boom meant an enormous increase in automobiles. This lead to an explosion in the growth of the garage door industry. Today our industry has created even more efficient and technologically advanced designs in both garage doors and garage door openers.

Garage Door Materials

For many decades, wood was the most common choice for garage door construction. However in the 1980’s most companies began to move away from this practice. The first generation of galvanized steel doors were introduced and soon revolutionized the industry. Steel doors had already existed for several years, but there were some major drawbacks to earliest models. This included issues with structural integrity, rust and oil canning. However these new generation of galvanized steel raised-panel doors would address the problems of previous designs. Eventually steel doors would become the most popular material for new garage doors. These durable, lightweight steel doors provided a beautiful, low-maintenance option. Many of these doors surpassed earlier designs in both looks and functionality, and to this day insulated steel doors are still the most popular choice for most homeowners.

Increasing Safety & Features

The functionality and design of garage doors and openers has come a long way since the humble beginnings of converted barns with carriage house style doors that had to be opened by hand. As technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, the garage door industry has followed suit. Manufacturers constantly look for ways to provide safer, more efficient options for homeowners. There are now more options than ever for someone who is looking to boost their home’s curb appeal by installing a new garage door. Garage door openers now come with built in Wi-Fi, allowing homeowners to receive security notifications on their smartphone and control their garage doors from anywhere in the world.

If you are in the market for a new garage door, please feel free to contact us at Entry Systems to schedule an estimate with a technician who can help you choose the best option for your garage.

Stand UP for Veterans brings together resources in Orange County

We were proud to support our military veterans last week at this great event.

by Justin Massey

Entry Systems staff attend the Stand UP for Veterans event.

Justin and Bonnie with Stand UP for Veterans organizer and local realtor John Hacker.

It’s critical communities come together to support those in need. Many in Orange County are struggling to receive basic resources. Far too many of our military veterans face homelessness and other difficult life circumstances including mental illness and unemployment. In fact, 1,388 Veterans are homeless in Orange County and 6,048 veterans are unemployed at any one time. However, there are many great organizations working to improve our veterans’ quality of life.

A great turnout at the Stand UP for Veterans event in Santa Ana.

The Stand UP for Veterans event brought a wide variety of organizations providing resources to those who’ve served.

Bonnie and I were excited to attend the Stand UP for Veterans event last Thursday in Santa Ana. We heard about it through local realtor and veteran John Hacker at the Orange County Association of Realtors (OCAR). John shared with us the opportunity to get involved. Since a key value of our family’s business is community service, we were proud to support this great cause. The goal of this event was to “help United States Veterans who are homeless, displaced, disabled or otherwise in transition become integrated into our community.” Service providers came together to offer resources for mental health, medical, housing, clothing, employment, law and education/training. A beauty and massage school even gave free haircuts and massages!

Each veteran was greeted and paired with a peer mentor who guided them to resources specific to their needs.

They left with a large duffel bag filled with resources. Everything from socks and underwear to a pillow and a handmade blanket woven from plastic bags were included. This innovative blanket (see picture above) not only retains body heat for the winter, but also helps fend off moisture from the ground. We left the event encouraged to see so many people gathered to support those who’ve served and eager to find new ways to partner with veterans organizations in the future.

Reclaimed Wood Garage Doors Add a Vintage Charm

Upgrading your home with a vintage reclaimed wood garage door adds more than just beauty, it adds value with a 91.5% return on investment.

by Bonnie Joy Massey

It was easy falling in love with “rural” living when I moved to Northern California to study at Sonoma State University. I would run past the vineyards, the Christmas tree farm and my neighbors’ horses, cows and chickens. I would breathe in the smell of manure and freshly baked bread from the bakery down the street (obviously an unusual pairing). But one of my favorite sights was the old dilapidated barns. They were beautiful—full of history. They were worn through and through by storms but still standing.

These structures were a far cry from the buildings I grew up with in South Orange County. I was used to strip malls and Cape Cod or Spanish style two-story single family homes. These old barns had character! They had a past—were well used, well loved. They once provided income (or so I dreamed) for hard-working farmers to support their families for generations to come. Since I grew up in our family business Entry Systems, I have a deep appreciation for small, family-run companies. I felt pride and nostalgia looking at those beautiful, historic barns.

Modern trends utilize reclaimed barnwood to beautify the home.

Naturally, as an artist and a supporter of sustainable living, I’m delighted by the vintage reclaimed wood some homeowners are using for their garage doors. They are visually stunning, and I love the fact they are authentic barn doors recycled for the needs of a modern home. Some of these doors used are over 100 years old!

A reclaimed wood garage door is available from Carriage House Door in three colors: Sienna, Umber and Cordovan.

One of our garage door manufacturers Carriage House Door out of Sacramento, California- offers these beautiful doors.

Upgrading your home with a vintage reclaimed wood garage door adds more than just beauty and charm, it adds value. This retrofit project has a great return on investment (ROI). In fact, according to Remodeling Mag’s Cost vs. Value report for last year, upgrading your home with a high-end garage door has a 91.5% ROI. This is one of the highest returns of any single home improvement project. Entry Systems would love to give you a free in-home estimate for a new garage door if you are ready to boost your curb appeal and add value to your home!

Why Harrison Ford Has Me Considering Garage Door Safety

By Bonnie Massey

Harrison Ford / Garage Door Safety
Credit: Movie Stills Database

I grew up on the Star Wars franchise, binge watching all three original episodes with my dad and three brothers when we could. My favorite was always the second one,  The Empire Strikes Back. Honestly, like many children of the eighties, the main reason I loved watching Star Wars was that I thought the rugged Harrison Ford was incredibly handsome.

Years later while working in our family garage door business, I attended the International Door Association Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. While walking through Caesar’s Palace, who did I see sitting alone, but Harrison Ford? Like an excited schoolgirl, I mustered up my courage to talk to him: “Hello?” He raised his head. I continued, “I just wanted to tell you that I have loved your movies since I was a little girl, and I wanted to thank you for making them.” He looked down shyly, shook my hand and smiled. It was an exciting moment for me to meet this actor I had looked up to for so long.

Now Harrison Ford is making news headlines, not for his acting, but for winning a lawsuit regarding an injury he sustained on a London movie set while filming one of the newest films in the Star Wars franchise: The Force Awakens.

There was a lack of communication between the person operating a hydraulic door and the actor on the set of the Millennium Falcon. The operator unknowingly closed the door while Harrison Ford was underneath it, and the door fell like a “blunt guillotine” millimeters from Ford’s face. The steel door hit him with the weight of a small car and pinned him by the pelvis to the ground as he passed underneath it. Disney was fined over $2.6 million dollars over this incident. The court was told that Ford could have been killed by the heavy door and that the production company was responsible for ensuring a safe workplace. Ford suffered fractures to his fibula and tibula, and he had a dislocated ankle. Ford was airlifted to a hospital in Oxford after the incident and later had surgery on his left leg.

Harrison Ford’s injury has raised much needed public awareness of the potential dangers associated with operating any large moving door, and this relates to garage door safety at home.

While hydraulic doors and garage doors are not exactly the same, they share some important similarities. Both are powerful machines, which provide security and convenience, but both can be dangerous if one is not careful.

It’s critical to be aware and pro-active with your garage door in order to avoid possible injuries, and keep your loved ones and yourself safe.  As the International Door Association website states: The “proper installation, operation, and maintenance and testing [of your garage door] are necessary to provide safe, trouble-free operation. An improperly adjusted garage door or automatic opener can exert deadly force when the door closes. This could lead to serious injury or death from being hit by a closing garage door or from being trapped under the door.”

This is some scary stuff! Our company, Entry Systems strongly suggests regular maintenance of your garage door and operator to ensure safe operation. You can do your own garage door safety check by following some simple steps from IDA’s garage door safety reference guide.

Remember, we are always here for our local Orange County residents, and would love to set up a maintenance plan for you to avoid those stressful emergency calls when something breaks unexpectedly!
