The City of Modjeska Canyon
Modjeska Canyon is named after the 19th-century stage actress Helena Modjeska (mother of the Ralph Modjeski, “America’s greatest bridge builder”). It is an unincorporated community of about several hundred residents, located on the western side of the Santa Ana Mountains and surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest.
The ENC (Environmental Nature Center) at Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary is also located here, on 12 acres with nature trails and a natural history museum. Visitors enjoy bird watching and hiking as well as private tours of “Arden”, a National Historic Landmark and the former home of Helena Modjeska from 1888 to 1906.
The community hosts several resident-only parties and events during the year including pot lucks, movie nights in the park, Christmas and Halloween festivities as well as the 4th of July parade. The Arts & Crafts Fair at Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary is also open to all and takes place every year in early spring. The most highly rated restaurants in the area are Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse, perfect after a day in the canyon. Another excellent choice is Xacalli Kitchen in scenic Silverado Canyon with regional Mexican cuisine and craft cocktails. .
