Costa Mesa, Orange County, California
Costa Mesa (Spanish for “coastal tableland”) was established in 1920 and is located above Newport Bay. Its first inhabitants were American Indians, and by the 1880s, it was an agricultural community known as Fairview. Settlers bought land from the heirs of Jose Antonio Yorba, a Corporal in the Spanish Army who was awarded 63,414 acres.
By 1889 there was a schoolhouse and a hotel to accommodate visitors at the hot sulfur springs nearby. But a storm the same year destroyed the nearby railroad and financially ruined the community. As a result, another smaller town called Harper emerged nearby. It was the site of the area’s first General Store, Ozment’s, located at Newport and 18th Streets.
In 1920 the town of Harper officially changed its name to Costa Mesa. World War II brought thousands of new residents to the area for training at the Santa Ana Army Air Base. When the war ended, the population continued its rapid growth. Incorporated in 1953, Costa Mesa has grown into a vibrant city. Besides being known as “The City of the Arts,” Costa Mesa has some of the best restaurants, including the only three 1-star Michelin restaurants in Orange County, Hana Re, Knife Pleat, and Taco Maria. Costa Mesa also has a Tony Award-winning play production house, the South Coast Repertory Theater.
The Orange County Fair dates back to 1890, when the first fair was held in Santa Ana and consisted of horse races and livestock shows. By 1925 a rodeo and carnival were added. After the Second World War, the fairgrounds were moved to 150 acres of the old Santa Ana Army Air Base. A mainstay of Costa Mesa, the OC Fair & Event Center hosts over 150 events every year, including a 25-day summer festival.
Costa Mesa is less than two miles from Newport Beach and near Huntington Beach and Disneyland Park. It is one of the best shopping destinations in the world, from high-end retail stores to small boutiques. It is home to one of the largest luxury malls in the nation, South Coast Plaza, and three “Anti-Malls” in the SoBeCa District (‘South on Bristol Entertainment, Cultures, and Arts’).
