The City of Aliso Viejo, Orange County, California
Aliso Viejo became a city in 2001, bordering the cities of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, and Laguna Woods. The land was originally granted to Juan Avila by the Mexican government in 1842. It then became part of Moulton Ranch, which was owned by the Moulton family starting in the 1890s. In 1976 the Mission Viejo Company purchased the 6,600 acres with the master plan for 20,000 homes with a planned population of 50,000. In 1982 the first homes were available for sale. At the same time, 2,600 acres of Aliso Viejo were dedicated to Orange County as part of the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.
The Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park is considered a major regional park in Orange County, surrounded by suburban development and the Pacific Ocean. The park includes hiking trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, and geological features like caves, springs, and exposed marine fossil beds. It is also one of the largest sanctuaries in coastal Orange County for coyotes and bobcats! Other animals that find refuge here are the California gnatcatcher, pond turtle, San Diego horned lizard, orange-throated whiptail, Pacific pocket mouse, great egret, white-tailed kite, northern harrier, sharp-shinned hawk, Cooper’s hawk, ferruginous hawk, cactus wren, yellow warbler, and the yellow-breasted chat. Five bald eagles and peregrine falcons have also been sighted flying along the canyon.
An additional 800 acres were also set aside for local parks, recreation, schools, and community facilities. The Aliso Viejo Community Association manages the local parks and community open space and was the first of its kind in California. Aliso Viejo was also the first planned community in California to try to plan a balance between the jobs available and the housing for its residents. Their goal was to create the opportunity for their residents to live and work in the same city. They attempted to achieve this by building the town center and business park, which they predicted to provide more than 22,000 jobs.
